An Act of Stupidity

Scene 1

Tube Lights flooding the entire scene at the beginning. Later(5 mins. into the play) the spotlight traces only the protagonists leaving the rest in semi-darkness.

This is about a meeting or several meetings of two people. They are first seen separated by a sea of furniture, in a library room where silence reigns supreme and surveillance cameras assist patrollers. These patrollers have bloodshot eyes, dressed in crumpled blue shirts and black trousers. They are of different body types but all of them have their fingers on their lips. Their actions are restricted to walking, nodding and glaring. About the two people, they never talk with each other or there is no verbal meeting of strangers. Only one of them utters a plea but thats about it. The "meeting" lasts for more than an hour and it is not entirely without words. There is An Act of Stupidity, a physical, incommunicable acknowledgment of a meeting. As you might have guessed. i am talking about two people staring at other, one is doing it intentionally and the other as a reaction.

Scene 2

No lights on the protagonists. Central part of the stage fully lit in a broad yellow light. Protagonists in darkness.

A meeting of the people who sat between the protagonists of the previous scene. Mostly composed of whispers, giggles, gestures, shoe sounds, turning of pages, throat clearing, coughing, sneezing, chairs being shifted, scratching of body parts(over clothes), the distant sound of radio playing in a nearby cafe, the continuous rumble of buses. And the clock. The clock which ticks time away at a speed depending on the longevity of the battery.

One of the protagonist gets up from his/her table. The other one looks up momentarily and then shyly lowers his/her gaze and starts scribbling something in a pad.

Fade into darkness and nothing happens for 5 mins.

Scene 3

Quick removal of furnitures. The screen at the back is illuminated by slide projectors. These projectors are attached to surveillance cameras in the hall and on the stage. The screen is split by 4 cameras' footage. One from stage right, one from overhead centrally located with a wide field of vision, one from audience right and the other as necessary. We see one of the protagonist walking out but we never see his/her face or we don't hear a sound. We see the boy scribbling away furiously seated downstage stage right.. Curtains are drawn while the footages are being shown. Pause. Sound of the seated protagonist shifting out of his seated posture.
